Post-visit learning: student activities, project ideas and questions

These post-visit activities draw upon students’ experiences during their visit to Mount Morgan, including the scientific testing of the water samples, the preparation of a report and a poster presentation.

TASK 1: A Poster Presentation of Gold Mining at Mount Morgan

This task is provided to emphasise the scientific processes used to get the gold out of the ground. During their visit to the Mount Morgan Museum the students will have seen numerous pieces of equipment to allow the miners to collect the gold contained in the ores.

Either, select one process and collect information about how it works and show the steps in obtaining the gold with photographs and artworks, or show the changing nature of the processes used as the times and the gold ore found at the mine changed.

The processes are detailed on the sheets of Resource 3.

TASK 2: The Mine Game

The Mine Game, Resource 4, is a simple card game to emphasise the types of processes used were required to be appropriate to the raw material being mined.

TASK 3: Simple Water testing

This task is provided to emphasise the effect of the mine on the local environment.
