Mount Morgan swinging bridges

In the 1890s, there were six pedestrian suspension or swinging bridges over the Dee River in Mount Morgan. They were built to ensure easy access between the town and mine site, even during floods.

They were constructed of wooden decking suspended from steel cables, anchored to each bank by a frame.

No.5 This bridge spans the river from Tipperary Point to Red Hill. The Red Hill end is opposite the railway cutting.

The bridge was badly damaged in 1928 flooding and declared unsafe and unusable.

In 1937, the Mount Morgan Shire Council had this bridge rebuilt under the supervision of Mr Bob Lennox. It is 315-feet long, anchor to anchor. Its main suspension span is 193 feet 3 inches.
