About the Museum

The Mount Morgan Historical Museum was erected in 1895 as a general store for James Stewart, a Rockhampton businessman. It sold a range of goods including drapery, clothing, tailoring, boots, furniture and crockery.

After the temporary mine closure in 1925, the population of mount Morgan fell dramatically, and business declined, leading to the store's closure in 1928.

Since then it has had many uses, reflecting the ongoing changes in Mount Morgan.

In 1977, Mount Morgan Limited donated the building to the Trustees of the Mount Morgan Historical Museum.

The Museum was officially opened here on 21 November 1983.
