Historical and cultural significance

Fighting the Razorback

Trafficking mine machinery up Razorback was a long and difficult process. Large pieces of equipment had to be dismantled and hauled up by a team of bullocks. A huge battery, used to crush stone, alone took a month to transfer up the unforgiving slope.

Not all of Mount Morgan township supported a rail link. Some feared loss of trade to Rockhampton. However, the Government backed the company directors and the nine easy miles from Kabra to Moonmera opened on 15 June 1898. Each train from Rockhampton halted at Moonmera, while the Abt engine shunted onto the back, pushed the train up the steep section to Moongan.

The people of Mount Morgan soon took full advantage of having of a rail link. Three trains ran during the week with two trains on Sunday allowing excursions to the beaches of Emu Park.

The trains were immediately put to work by sporting teams travelling to other towns for games, and bringing teams from elsewhere to play in Mount Morgan.
