Acid-mine Drainage & Rehabilitation

When the first gold-seekers began taking Iron Mountain apart, they had no idea they were assisting chemical reactions which would wreak havoc, and still be happening over a century later.

Soil here contains a high level of iron sulphides, or pyrites. While the soil is undisturbed, and virtually sealed off from air and moisture, it is not a problem. However, once it is disturbed and exposed to oxygen and water, a reaction produces sulphuric acid. Rain and natural drainage then washes this acid off-site into the Dee River.
